Fuego

Picture
Sweet, little Fuego is a Satin.

He's about 2 years old and been staying with us at the refuge for nearly a year. A Satin guinea pig has a very shiny coat which looks quite lovely, but it's the result of a genetic condition which means he will likely have a short life due to a dreadful disease called osteodystrophy.

Osteodystrophy is an incurable and painful disease of the bones. Because of this disease he requires plenty of vitamin D to keep his bones healthy and strong so he is lucky enough to have grabbed a window position at his foster mum's house to get the afternoon sun and view.

Although he doesn’t show signs of Osteodystrophy yet, there’s always the possibility he could, which is why Fuego will live the rest of his life here at the refuge so can make sure he gets any special care he needs.

Not eating is another sign of the disease which means he may need dentals in the future. His foster mum record shis weight every week to ensure he is sticking to a healthy and stable weight. At the moment he is still ‘Pop-Corning’ around his cage and seems to be a very happy boy. We hope he'll continue to stay this way!
